Meet the team: Millie Wei, HR Assistant

For this ‘Meet the team’ episode, we sat down with Millie Wei, HR Business Partner Assistant at SHAOKE. From studying HR fundamentals at university to gaining hands-on experience through internships and on-campus projects, Millie developed a passion for aligning HR strategies with business needs.

In her role today, she handles a mix of tasks, from onboarding new employees to collaborating with business teams on key HR initiatives. She shared her thoughts on what makes SHAOKE’s culture unique and gave some advice for those looking to join the team.

Can you tell us about yourself and your journey to becoming an HR Business Partner (HRBP) Assistant?

During university, I built a solid foundation in core areas of HR, including recruitment, training, performance management, and employee relations. I developed a keen interest in the HRBP role, recognizing its unique focus on aligning HR strategies with specific business needs to drive growth. To explore this further, I engaged in on-campus projects like talent planning, where I analyzed skill requirements for different phases of business projects and developed recruitment and training plans.

My internship gave me hands-on experience across various HR functions, but working as an HRBP intern was especially impactful. Collaborating with business teams, I identified pain points and proposed tailored HR solutions, which deepened my understanding of the HRBP role. After graduation, I joined SHAOKE as an HRBP Assistant, supporting the team with tasks like personnel data analysis and performance evaluation. Though I’m just starting out, I’m passionate about growing in this role and contributing to the company’s success.

What does a typical day look like for you in your role, and what do you enjoy most about it?

A typical day in my role starts with checking emails to address urgent matters like onboarding or visa processing. I then organize and cross-check attendance data to ensure accuracy, as it directly impacts payroll. Mornings often involve onboarding tasks, where I prepare documents, greet new employees, and guide them through policies and procedures to help them integrate smoothly. If visa-related tasks arise, I coordinate with departments or external agencies to ensure seamless processing, supporting the company’s overseas operations.

Afternoons are dedicated to verifying overseas payroll details, working with finance and international branches to confirm salary data and ensure timely, accurate payments. Afterward, I summarize the day’s work and prepare for upcoming tasks. What I enjoy most is being involved in all stages of the employee experience, from onboarding to payroll, as it allows me to make meaningful contributions. Whether creating positive first impressions for new hires or ensuring precise payroll for overseas employees, I feel my efforts support both the team and the company’s growth while helping me develop professionally.

How would you describe the team culture at SHAOKE?

The leadership encourages transparency and actively involves employees in decision-making processes, ensuring that all voices are heard, whether it’s through regular team meetings or one-on-one check-ins.

The team is goal-oriented and highly focused on delivering results, but we also prioritize work-life balance and the well-being of our employees. There’s a real sense of camaraderie, with colleagues often stepping in to help each other out, whether in project work or day-to-day tasks.
