It may be either volumetric weight or gross weight, whichever is greater.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The carrying capacity of every aircraft, truck, and ship is ultimately limited by space or weight. If you load a vessel with heavy cargo, you may hit its weight limit before filling all available space. If you load a vessel with light cargo, you may fill all available space before hitting the weight limit.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>When calculating the cost of moving your shipment, the carrier will consider both the weight and volume of your cargo, by converting the volume into a \u201cweight equivalent,\u201d also known as\u00a0volumetric weight\u00a0(or sometimes\u00a0dimensional weight). The carrier will then charge per kilogram for whichever is greater: the actual weight (also known as\u00a0gross weight) or the\u00a0volumetric weight.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In other words, shipping 1 kilogram of feathers costs more than shipping 1 kilogram of steel, assuming that the cartons of feathers take up more space than the cartons of steel.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>This explains why in some cases, especially when\u00a0shipping by air, you\u2019ll see both actual weight and chargeable weight in your shipment record.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Actual weight\u00a0is the number you provide us with when you submit your initial quote request. We calculate your quote based on this number. Actual weight = gross weight.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Chargeable weight\u00a0is the number on your invoice; it\u2019s the amount the carrier charged to move your shipment. The chargeable weight is whichever of the following is greater:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>The gross weight (including the product, packaging, pallet, etc.),\u00a0<em>or<\/em><\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>The volumetric weight<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Terminology:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.ctfassets.net\/92fo1e671z6m\/7tBNp94SFDAHJeE2YfCtdv\/c2c725773c2a05fe0b08751a43af1305\/chargeable-weight-0.jpg\" alt=\"markdown image\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.ctfassets.net\/92fo1e671z6m\/5WpuNheBlOX94sMwpz9mjK\/a59f04bb2caf32d7eeed2de3576762a7\/chargeable-weight-1.jpg\" alt=\"markdown image\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How is volumetric weight calculated?<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Volumetric weight calculations vary by mode of transportation and sometimes by trade lane. This table shows how various types of carriers calculate dimensional weight.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.ctfassets.net\/92fo1e671z6m\/2XbENTRcXBYPow7p692Dpi\/01a7b8efba5a52526e00af2bcf96bbd8\/chargeable-weight-2.jpg\" alt=\"markdown image\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How can I better estimate my shipment\u2019s chargeable weight?<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The best way is to make sure that the information you\u2019re providing in your initial quote request is accurate as possible.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In many cases, we find that once the cargo is picked up, it turns out to be larger than expected. A common reason for this is\u00a0palletization. Does your supplier palletize your products? This will affect weight and volume. The more you know about how your product is packaged and palletized, the more accurate our quote will be.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Here\u2019s what your actual weight and chargeable weight look like in the Flexport app (actual weight is labeled as\u00a0<em>total weight<\/em>):<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.ctfassets.net\/92fo1e671z6m\/5a5qetfAyWAsGXHAZA14EF\/3d133cc713b975351b62698e351adf56\/chargeable-weight-3.jpg\" alt=\"markdown image\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In addition to appearing on your Flexport invoice, the chargeable weight also appears on the\u00a0Airway Bill, which you can access in the\u00a0Documents\u00a0tab for a given shipment.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flexport.com\/glossary\/split-shipment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">s<\/a>hipment may be split\u00a0because the airline will load a combination of lighter and heavier cargo to ensure a safe flight.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chargeable weight is what the airline uses to determine the cost of your shipment.
